You Are Loved Layout

 

Wow how is it July already?? Here in Melbourne it has been pretty darn chilly of late so really no excuse not to be scrapping and creating right ??  Yes.. if only work didn't get in the way !!!

Veronica recently organised for a new kit to be sent to Sue and I .  The Layout above is the first creation I have produced with the lovely materials and products that were inside that pizza box !!!

Love the colours of these papers from the Pink Paislee Cottage Farms collection - and Veronica had matched them so well with the flowers .. from abroad - not a bad accomplishment !!

 

Here's basically what I did

I distressed the edges of 2 pink and two newsprint pp rectangles, inked them and adhered them in position.

Mounted the photo onto printed text tissue paper and scrunched the edges and on it went.

Loving banners at the moment so punched some flags out and attached them to some twine with staples

 

 

I weaved a piece of tissue paper through the photo frame, tucked it under the pink and over the newsprint pp, attached with staples and added the word elements

 

Placed some yummy flowers down the side of the photo.

Painted the title chipboard letters and chip flourishes with red paint . Then gave them 2 coats of the Glimmer Glam - this is gorgeous stuff !! It has little bit of glitter

which don't show up in the photos but the beautiful frosty sheen it adds does.

 

 

I dried it with a heat gun on low and it bubbled a bit on the letters - but I really like the effect :)

 

The flourishes were tucked in with the flower clusters and the title adhered along with the smaller letters from the element sticker sheet.

 

And there you have it !!

April - A Year in Time

For April's page I have used a montage of photos from Easter 2012. I decided to uses object photos, Easter eggs, Easter cake - made by my sister, Easter flowers and chicks that were on some gifts.  It sure is challenging to fit the photos on these smaller pages and using non people photos seemed a good idea this time. 

1. For this page i started with the back of the Foundation April page from the Graphic 45 A Place In Time pad.
2. I mounted the 4 mini photos onto two pieces of cardstock from the Core'dinations Vintage Collection pad. I edge punched the green card.
3. I added some of the lovely green trim from my DT pack and some flowers - Prima Hello Pastel Collection and some tiny roses from my stash.
4. Also scattered around the photos are some Want 2 Scrap's Say It with a Bling silver rhinestones.
5. The title was added next - using letters from the A Place In Time Alphabet sticker sheet.

 

I used a tag from the May cut aparts page as it had colours to suit my page and a tag and word  from the sentiments sheet These were written on and then added to the page with two decorative pins through the tag holes

Hmm now what did i do in May last year, May is a big month for me Mother's Day, birthdays .. off to have a look at  my photos.

April - A Year in Time!

Another month for my A year in Time Album, this time April. Still a little behind but hope to catch up real soon by doing an extra month this time round. I hope you are enjoying the album so far, I am having a lot of fun playing with all the fabulous products from the Wild About Scrap store!

As soccer is a big part of my eldest son and husbands life I thought I would dedicate April to this, being as it's the start of the season. He has been playing since he was 7 years old and I am thrilled and proud that he still plays today! My husband watches a lot of the EPL on the telly but is also involved in training and match games with my boy. Keeping with the distress theme of my album I had a play with paints for this months page. Normally I love to distress my edges with TH distress inks but as I have been playing with art journals I have rediscovered the wonderful texture and versatility of paint. So I had fun getting extremely messy! I did however try to keep this months page more grunge and boyish but as you can see some flowers just sneaked they way in lol.

 1.  Using the reverse of the G45 April foundation A Place In Time page I cut and distressed all four edges and adhered it to a piece of contrasting yellow bazzill.
2.  Spritzing with some diluted gesso and DA Oceania paint I splashed, added droplets and flicked paint over and around the page. Using an old softdrink top I added white gesso circles and allowed to dry.

3.  Using the coordinating cut apat from previous months which were left over I chose some green patterned floral paper, a tag, and a postcard which I distressed. Also using a MS scalloped edge punch on a piece of Donna Salazar patterned paper strip, inking the edges with TH distress ink Vintage Photo, a heart shaped lace doily and more core'dination cardstock which I stamped with Prima Script cling stamp.
4.  Arrange and layer all pieces under a small landscape photo which has been matted on Core'dindations cardstock and distressed. I also added a blue arrow from Kaiser.
5.  Adding a few flowers from Petaloo and Prima. (just can't help myself! don't you agree a layout isn't quite finished unless it has at least one or two flowers)

6.  Lastly I finished with a handmade calico banner which I stamped with the Prima Script cling stamp, threaded with jute.

 Here is the completed page again, I really like the messy look and the feel, I hope I have inspired you to experiment and get a little messy when you are creating, you wont regret it :)

A Year in Time - April

Hello everyone and welcome to my April - A Year in Time page.

 

When sick with the flu recently I was getting bored of repeats on TV so I started watching some YouTube videos to get some new ideas and inspiration.  Wow, there are some clever people out there....I don't know where they get their ideas from.  Anyway, this layout was partly inspirted from one of the Prima videos.

 

This layout gives a quick overview of Easter in Sicily...or in Taormina anyway.  Easter here isn't driven by chocolate (the Easter Bunny can have a bit of a break in Italy), but is a religeous experience with the main events being the decoration of the churches and an extremely solemn procession through the streets carrying statues and candles.  Traditions going back for maybe hundreds of years.  It is definitely a special experience.

For something different, the Cut-Aparts paper has been torn into pieces, distressed and glued to the Foundations paper in a randomish fashion.  I also included some from the March paper. The Prima lace ribbon was added next.

These papers and ribbon were then lightly painted with Gesso which allows the pattern to be seen throug, but in a muted fasion.  Once dried, I sprayed the entire page with Glimmer Mist Pearl, which gives the Gesso a lovely pearly sheen. 

The 2 other Glimmer Mist colours - Tokyo & Lobster - were added by removing the sprayer from the bottle and flicking the end over th3e paper to give a droplet effect....in some parts it smudged, but overall I like the effect.

The photos were then added along with the flowers, buttons & bird charm.  With the title added last.  To help the flowers blend into the background Gesso was lightly brushed across all flowers & the charm. 

I hope you like my April page.  I'm sorry if this post isn't written overly well as my brain is still mushy from this flu!  As they say, "tomorrow's another day" so hopefully I'll be healed soon.

"Silhouettes"

For the past week I've been house-bound with the flu and getting bored with sleeping and watching TV reruns I started watching some of the Prima videos on YouTube...They are a great source of inspiration if a little long.  I'm going to exceed my download limit this month for sure!  The designers are truly clever and I've already stolen a few ideas and there are more I can't wait to try out.

For this layout I've used a somewhat crazy layering technique.  It looks difficult, but was surprisingly easy and I really love how it turned out....I'm sure I'll be using this technique again!

I love this photo. I took a series of them and I'm sure I'll be doing more layouts using these photos. I love how you've got the colours from the sun as it's setting behind Mt Etna and just the shadows of the people (and dog) in the foreground.

"Crazy Layering" - I'm not sure if there's a better name, but this is the name that came to me and seems to suit this style.

 

The layered papers come from one entire sheet of 12x12 pattern paper.  In this case I substituted 1/3 sheet for another pattern paper to add some colour to the mix.

 

Take your sheet of pattern paper and cut roughly into thirds.  As the edges are going to be distressed you don't need to make exactly straight cuts if using a knife.

 

The first 1/3 I cut in half giving 2 x 6" long pieces, the rest I randomly cut from 2 1/2" to 5" wide. 

 

Distress all edges with a distressing tool and then ink with distress ink.  This helps to give the layering definition and to raise the pieces slightly from each other. 

 

I arranged the 2 largest pieces first and then tucked the different size pieces under (or over) until I got a shape I was happy with. 

 

Carefully flipping the stack over, I carefully glued each piece in place. Further dimension can be achieved by using foam tape between the layers.

 

 
I am also getting braver with clustering of flowers.  I can see I'm going to run out of flowers quickly using so many at once, but I really love the effect of having a bunch of flowers together on the layout.
 
The Dusty Attic corner scroll was painted with the Ranger Paint Dabbers - entirely with Espresso then random dabs with Butterscotch.
 
To finish off, Glimmer Mist Summer Glow was flicked (by taking the sprayer out of the bottle and flicking the end) over the edges of the layout, and a squirt over the title.

This entire layout was done in less than an afternoon - a record for me.  I can take days to complete a page.  However, with all the layering it appears quite complex.

Art Journal

Art Journals

What is an art journal you ask, basically it is a diary. It can be a daily journal or just about everyday things each month or memorable moments that you wish to journal about. How you use it is entirely up to you :)

Art journals are fun and a great way to learn or share new techniques. I am going to share a quick step by step to creating your very own Art Journal page. I love the freedom of these journals, you can try new products or techniques and be as creative as you like, journals are awesome for using up all those little bits of left overs or your stash :). First you need a book, can be a cheap exercise book or a hardcover blank book in whatever size you like. Then you need to decide what you are going to put on your page. Journal about the things you love, what's on your mind, where you've travelled, things you are grateful for or inspire you, choose a song and add the lyrics or maybe what you want your future to hold. So lets get started...

Step One: Gesso is your friend and a great base, so apply some to your page and while that's drying you can use this time to go pick out some scrap papers, embellishments, inks, pens or markers from your stash or if like me you are a little impatient give it a blast with your heat gun. (No need for this step if your page is white, has no blemishes or bleeding from previous pages)

Step Two: Choose two or three distress inks and use your blending tool - I used Tattered Rose, Aged Mahogany and Scattered Straw. Mist lightly with water to help blend all the colours together. Gives a lovely soft look. Another idea for backgrounds is using an old giftcard or credit card and scrapping paint over the page for really cool effect!
 

Step Three: Pick out one of your favourite Glimmermists or Perfect Pearl Mists in coordinating colour and spray onto your page. I used Tattered Angels Vintage Pink, adds a really nice sheen! Watercolours are also great.

Step Four:  Choose some stencils, templates or punches and create your design, you might like to add some texture and depth. Ripped paper, drywall tape and other household items can add extra interest and texture. Using TH Distress Paints, TH Distress Inks, Donna Salazar mixed media Inx Chox, texture paste or any other medium you like just keep building layers.

Step Five:  Randomly add some stamped images, allowing some to hang off the page. Using a black (or a colour of your choice) sharpie pen start doodling on your page. Don't think to much about it, just have fun and let your imagination flow! Using black and white charcoal pencils are also fun. Add a quote or an inspiration thought!

Step six:  Ink around the edges with TH Walnut Ink or DS Inx Chox Sparrow to grunge up the pages a bit to finish off.

TIPS: Jar lids, bottle tops, sponges, kitchen spatula's, plastic doily's, steel wool and so much more can be used to create different textures on your backgrounds in your journal. Just think outside the square :)

A Year in Time - March

March 2012 was a bit exciting as our friendly volcano Etna let off a fair bit of steam with some spectacular displays.  I caught this one on a Sunday morning as I was heading for breakfast in the local bar (always a good excuse for a croissant and cappuccino when you forget to buy milk!).  Of course, I had to turn right around and run back to the house for my camera.  This plume of ash eventually covered the sky until the sun was covered.  This photo and the others I took that day are my favourite photos taken here so far.

The purple and green theme for March really didn't go with my photo so I decided to make my own background.  Using the Foundations page I then spritzed with Ranger Adirondack Colour Wash and Tattered Angels Glimmer Mist to make the background blue with a hint of grey (for the ash) and purple for the already existing March flowers.
 

 
The Mesh Ribbon used in the background was originally white, but has been coloured using Tim Holtz Distress Stains.
 
The Pink Paislee Artisan range are a lot of fun. I literally slapped the Glimmer Glam on randomly, first the black then the orange and then some more black. In between drying with my heat gun. It was fast and easy and I now have an element totally unique for this page. I'm definitely going to be using these a lot more and will try for a tutorial for those who don't know what to do with them including me - I'm still learning. :)
 

 
This is a real learning process for me with this album.  I was very surprised at how much of a difference there is between 12x12 and 8x8.  With the first 2 months I know I tried to fit too much in.  Originally wanting to add even more photos.  This time I decided it was a perfect opportunity to showcase one special photo. 

For those of you wondering, no I haven't added my pages to the Easel yet as I need to find a spiral holepunch first!  Owning a store doesn't mean I have all the supplies for my own use...unfortunately.

Pretty much all supplies are available instore at Wild About Scrap.  Keep checking the blog as more projects will be uploaded soon including a tutorial on creating Art Journals by DT Member Sue Down.  I am currently experimenting with watercolouring using Tim Holtz Distress Pens....experimenting is probably a good word.  Nothing worth publishing yet, but maybe soon :)
